Criminals invade Noluthando Vavi’s bed-and-breakfast business

MORNINGSIDE – Zwelinzima Vavi's wife Noluthando Vavi's bed and breakfast business was invaded by criminals on Saturday, 11 May.

The secretary general of the South African Federation of Trade Unions, Zwelinzima Vavi, said that the criminals that invaded his wife Noluthando’s bed-and- breakfast business, tied up everyone and beat up the two security guards on duty. “They looted televisions, refrigerators, everyone’s visible cell phones, guest clothes, laptops, etc.”

The incident is said to have taken place around 8pm when Vavi’s wife, Noluthando called him with news that criminals had invaded her business.” In a panic, I didn’t ask questions as I assumed she was at home. I was about five minutes away from home when she called,” said Vavi in a lengthy Facebook post.

Vavi said that he and his bodyguard flew home immediately but they soon found out that she was not home but was calling from her business offices, offices they had passed on their way home. “These guys were about eight all with firearms. Had we driven there first, both I and the protector would probably have died.”

Vavi said that when his protector Armando arrived at his wife’s place, the criminals were nowhere to be found.  “It was just hectic. Throughout, these guys kept on demanding where she was and the keys of her car. She only walked to the bandit in the passage not aware of what was happening as she had been praying in her office all along,” explained Vavi.

“She ran back to her office locked herself in and called all of us for help. That’s when these guys panicked and took everything already in an Audi and a minibus and drove off. This is a reminder  that we live in a country at war with itself, “added Vavi.

Vavi and his family are said to be getting counselling following the ordeal.
