Mid-morning voting still smooth with only a few hiccups

JOBURG – Happy faces despite minor issues at voting stations.

South Africa is alive today with voters filing into IEC stations to cast their vote but for some, there have been many hiccups along the way.

Reports have surfaced reflecting that some voting stations ran out of scanner paper, ballot paper, lack of stationery and unstamped ballot papers.

In the Midrand area, journalists on the ground say there are hardly any young voters.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood said Randburg Home Affairs was down yesterday, meaning that many people could not get last minute temporary ID’s.

“I received word last night and managed to escalate the issue. The systems are up and running this morning,” said Wood.

Others have expressed frustration as certain voters have skipped the queue. The IEC explains that only the sick, elderly or parents with small babies are pushed to the front.

Despite small issues, there is a strong positive feeling across SA.

Kirsten Dugmore Randall, a local resident said on Facebook, “Fantastic experience-friendly, efficient, organised and professional. Well done @IEC team Hyde Park High!”
