MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun encourages people to report reckless driving

JOHANNESBURG – JMPD is in the process of tracing offenders of reckless driving.

MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun has called on Johannesburg residents to continue reporting motorists who drive recklessly on the roads.

This follows after the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) launched the reckless driving project in 27 March with the aim to make Joburg roads safe.

“We encourage our residents to continue to submit complaints on any reckless driving, inconsiderate driving, by-law offences and other crimes and we will take the necessary action steps,” said Sun.

“We are seeing a positive public response to the pilot hotline and the information received are assisting greatly us to deploy our limited metro policing resources to where it is needed the most.”

He added that since the launch of the Buya Mthetho Hotline, 2 329 complaints have been received. “We have received complaints which enables us to deploy JMPD to hotspots and transgressions and offences are prosecuted at these hotspots. We are in the process of tracing the offenders and investigations, once we have sufficient information we will continue with these prosecutions.

“We have received affidavits and statements from complainants to assist with investigations and prosecutions.

He has urged the public to send clear footages to make their work easier to trace the offenders. “Some of the footages submitted is not as per the requirement – bad quality images, unrecognisable vehicle registration number plates, no clear offence and insufficient information relating to the complaint.”

This hotline allows residents to report reckless and inconsiderate road behaviour along with other by-law infringements, by uploading the footage onto the WhatsApp-based hotline whereafter Metro police will follow up and take the necessary actions.

The photo or video must have been taken by the complainant themselves, and not be forwarded photos or clips that were taken by a third party or downloaded from other sources. The complainant must also be able and willing to testify against the offender if required in terms of the legal process.

Once the complaint is received, Metro police will analyse the evidence and deal with it accordingly, including submission of the complaint to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for prosecution.
The Reckless Driving Hotline WhatsApp number: 081 410 6338.
Voice complaints are still to be reported to Metro police: 011 375 5911.
