The Braamfontein Rehabilitation Spruit Project acts in the interest of the environment

BRYANSTON – This NPO will enable employment and independence for many unskilled labourers.

The Braamfontein Rehabilitation Spruit Project (BSRP) is a non-profit organisation that cleans up around the Bryanston Drive bridge and 12th Avenue Rivonia.

The NPO was started by Barry Cribb and Mike Cohen who has been a sponsor and member of the project. On 13 April the team hosted a clean-up.

Cribb said he has been maintaining and has recently replaced and repaired almost 500m of post and wire along River Road. Jenny Liao, one of the residents who had assisted in this event said,

“More people need to clean the environment and start using less plastic bags.”

The Interact Club, a student organisation, said it is sad that people just throw their rubbish all over the place.

BSRP said their vision is to establish a donation-funded workshop which will allow them to design, manufacture, instal and maintain, plastic- catching devices that will be fitted to the storm drains. The device will discharge into the spruit to trap plastic and other scattered pieces of rubbish or remains before it enters our river systems.

According to Cribb and Cohen, this is an ideal opportunity for skills training and job creation. Their workshop will assist individuals to learn how to do welding, metal work, power tool maintenance, and woodworking.

They have identified a number of small business opportunities that will become viable as the use of the area increases.

“We are keen to set up young unemployed people to operate and manage them, providing them with the necessary training and support,” said Cohen.

“This will enable their employment independence.”

Cribb added, “There are numerous other projects being planned which will provide further jobs, improve security and general safety in the area with a view to enable increased use of the area by all members of the public.”
