Cat volunteers at Sandton SPCA share their love

MARLBORO – Dedicated volunteers dedicate their time to make the cats at the Sandton SPCA feel more comfortable.

Volunteers at the Sandton SPCA work tirelessly to help care for many stray and abandoned animals and raise funds to provide them with the best possible care. This is the third instalment in a series of articles about the volunteers at the Sandton SPCA. The second article Friends to best friends was featured in the Sandton Chronicle [Week ending 12 April].

Each of the volunteers at the SPCA works through a roster of animals to ensure that each animal gets attention and time in an outdoor enclosure. The cat volunteers are a group of volunteers who regularly visit the cats with bags filled with chicken, catnip, and plasters (in case any scratches occur).

Carly Graeme, one of the long-time volunteers at the SPCA, said, “Our cat volunteers are delightful… they are absolutely dedicated to the cats, they make them toys, they make their kennels pretty, they are just so in love with our kitties.”

Many of the cat volunteers celebrated the adoptions of cats throughout the day and said that Marie Benvenutti, one of the long-time volunteers at the SPCA, said that she loves everything about the cats and loves being able to get to know the personalities of the cats.

“Sometimes when they come in these little cats are so bewildered, they don’t know what’s happening so we just sit with them and get them to relax and I just love getting to learn each of their personalities, each of them is so different,” said Benvenutti.

She added that it’s wonderful when they get to know an animal are able to match their personality with a potential adopter. “It is difficult when we have to say goodbye to a cat but it’s also joyous when we know that they’re going to a good home.”

She added that they love when adopters send photos of the animals in their new home and they can see the animals they love so dearly happy.

She added that, as with most animals, the kittens get adopted relatively quickly while the older cats may wait a bit longer and can be a bit more emotionally affected by their stay at the SPCA.

Hannah Litchfield, another volunteer at the SPCA, added that she adopted her cat Steve two years ago and can see herself adopting another one in the near future.

Every one of the volunteers said that they have adopted cats from the SPCA as sometimes they cannot resist the charms of their furry friends.
