St David’s Marist Inanda come out top SA Schools Sprint Championships

SANDTON – The prep school team were ranked the top boy's primary school at the SA Schools Sprint Championships.


St David’s Marist Inanda Prep School canoers came out top in the SA Schools Sprints Championships.

Twelve boys of the prep school and three college boys competed in this event with the prep school learners ranking in first place.

Carey Fisher-Geitzman, the marketing liaison officer for the school said,

“The boys showed grit and courage for never giving up and facing all these challenges head-on.”

Seven-year-old Joshua Friedericksen attained silver medals for the 200m and 500m sprints and the 2 000m long distance race. Luke Salmon won a silver medal in the 500m K1 sprints and a bronze medal for the 200m K1 Sprints as well as a bronze medal for the 500m K2 sprints with his partner Sean van der Westhuizen.

Jess Webber, a U12 paddler, won a bronze medal for the 200m sprints. Aiden Honke, a U10 Guppy Paddler, won a silver medal in the 200m sprints and a bronze in the 500m sprints and came third overall in the Guppy U10 boys.

Matthew Maccelarie, a U16 paddler, won a silver medal in the K2 500m sprints and U18 paddler Peter Tumiel won a bronze medal in the K2 500m Sprints.

Fisher-Geitzman added that the boys were complimented on their sportsmanship. “Notably, boys helping one another on and off the water. For their good manners and camaraderie. We are very privileged to have Phineas Zulu as our phenomenal coach. All our paddlers improved so much achieving personal bests in most of their races despite not winning many medals in the finals as we did last year.”
