MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun prioritises the safety of residents in Sandton

SANDTON – MMC to ensure the residents of Johannesburg are safe.

Safety in Sandton has not only been a major concern for the people in the area, but also a concern for the MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun.

The MMC met with Sandton precinct CPFs, South African Police Service (SAPS) in Sandton, JMPD regional representatives as well as the City of Johannesburg officials on 29 March to discuss the safety issues around the area.

“We spoke about general safety issues relating to smash-and-grabs, hijacking, by-law enforcement and traffic management in the area,” said Sun.

“I will ensure that the progress is monitored and that we continue to address some of the shortcomings and immediate issues that we need to attend to.”

Sund said they identified areas where traffic is a cause for concern for the residents of Sandton. He said JMPD traffic wardens will be deployed in those areas to alleviate traffic congestion.

“We have identified some of the places where we can really improve traffic management. As soon as the in-service training of the 172 JMPD traffic wardens is complete, then we will be able to deploy them to places such as Sandton, Rosebank and surrounding areas where we see there is serious congestion.”

The MMC visited the 1 500 JMPD trainees at the JMPD Academy Veritas campus to wish them good luck on 1 April.

“I visited the JMPD Academy just to wish them good luck ahead of their exams. We are hoping by the end of the year they will graduate and we will certainly welcome them into JMPD force.

“We will be able to deploy them to assist with traffic management and crime prevention and by-law enforcement in the City.”
