Friends of Sandspruit to host Earth Hour event

MORNINGSIDE – Local NPO, Friends of Sandspruit to host Earth Hour event for a good cause

Friends of Sandspruit will host an event to raise funds for their non-profit organisation.

The event will take place on 30 March at Ernest Ullmann Park at the ski-boat club.

Friends of Sandspriut is a non-profit environmental conservation group of volunteers. They have been involved in protecting and maintaining the Sandspruit greenbelt for almost 10 years for the benefit of the community and for those who will come after them. The Sandspruit greenbelt runs along both banks of the Sandspruit River, from the South Road bridge to the northern end of Ernest Ullmann Park in Morningside Manor.

Although their work has been endorsed by City Parks since 2012, and recently acknowledged by mayor Herman Mashaba, they receive no funding from them and rely solely on donations. Their aim is to establish ongoing relationships with environmentally minded individuals, businesses and corporates to continue their work of preserving the environment.

Earth Hour is an annual event, usually held on the last Saturday evening in March when millions of people and thousands of business worldwide turn off lights and shut down most electrical appliances to celebrate sustainability and show their support for strategies that will help solve the problem of global warming.

The fundraising event is to celebrate Earth Hour with well-known radio presenter, world traveller, the president of Birdlife Sandton and author of Yes, Really! Kate Turkington. They will also launch Professor Jane Carruthers’ local historian’s booklet on the history of Ernest Ullmann Park and the Sandspruit area. Carruthers has kindly donated this publication to the organisation for fundraising and she will attend the event and will gladly autograph her printed booklet.

Entrance is R100pp and attendees are advised to bring their own picnics. Cool drinks and drinks will be available at the bar. Booking is essential on info@sandspruit.org.za. All proceeds from ticket sales and booklet sales will go directly towards maintaining the park and river.
