Bryanston High learners give back

BRYANSTON – Learners collected tinned food and Easter eggs throughout February to donate to two organisations.

Bryanston High School learners demonstrated their giving spirit by getting involved in two charitable donations in the past month.

Since the beginning of February learners helped collect tinned food and soup packets for Charity Begins with Me and donated Easter Eggs to a non-governmental organisation called Isipepelo Sempilo, which will donate the chocolates to orphaned children.

Bronwyn Mackrory, a teacher at Bryanston High School who helped organise the donations explained that each register teacher was responsible for telling the learners about the project and encouraging them to get involved. The class who helped collect the most items were rewarded with a civvies day to thank them for their efforts.

Mackrory said that one of their biggest goals of the collections is to encourage the learners to give back and understand the impact of their help.

“They were absolutely incredible; they were really excited to get involved.”

The donation to Charity Begins with Me was made on 6 March with over 1 000 tins of food being donated to the charity to be used in food parcels. On 13 March, the learners at the school handed over the Easter eggs they had collected to Simphiwe Zondi, who started Isipepelo Sempilo.

Mackrory said that they decided to do an Easter egg collection because often donations are about providing essential items and they wanted to be able to provide orphaned children with a delicious treat. Learners from the consumer studies classes also baked gingerbread men and wrote individual messages on each one to donate.

Zondi explained that he started the organisation in 2013 when donating items to an orphanage in celebration of his 18th birthday. From there, he decided to play a more active role in helping others. Zondi explained that he donates items such as baby formula and baby grows to two charities.

Mackrory added that they really hoped to teach the children that no matter what they go through in their personal lives, it’s important to try and give back. The school plans to do another donation drive in April to help collect toiletries for those in need.
