Rivonia residents hope to curb road accidents

RIVONIA – Residents hope to have a traffic circle or traffic lights installed along 12th Avenue to prevent future accidents.

Concerned residents living along 12th Avenue in Rivonia hope that some traffic calming measures can be installed to prevent future accidents.

The Sandton Chronicle previously reported on the troubles along 12th Avenue in an online article 12th speed zone on 28 April 2016. Since then, some improvements have been made to the road, however, residents feel that it is still a danger.

Cheetah Crescent and Rivonia Residents Association member, Stuart Pithey, said that since the beginning of the year there have already been numerous accidents where motorists travelling around the bend misjudge the curb, mount the pavement and crash into a resident’s wall.

The road was widened at the intersection of Rietfontein Road which Pithey said has improved the traffic congestion but he hopes that a traffic circle will be installed at the intersection of Gemsbok Lane in order to ensure that people travel more slowly down 12th Avenue. Alternatively, he thinks that traffic lights at the Rietfontein Road intersection will prevent people from going around the bend at speed.

“I think people are now driving faster because they have widened up the road, it’s now fine for the traffic flow because it now allows for an increased volume. Guys are now flying down here,” said Pithey.

Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana said he believes chevron signs indicating the road is coming to a bend and eventually a barricade will reduce the instances of people crashing into the walls of properties along 12th Avenue.

Zoleka Jika, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency said that residents can request traffic calming measures in a form of a petition.

“Normally, people who reside along a particular road or street can sign a petition and send it to the speaker’s office. The office of the speaker is the custodian of petitions. It is, therefore, the duty of the speaker to promote and facilitate a fair and equitable process of considering petitions submitted to the council in terms of the current petitions process and policy.”

She added that the following steps will be taken following a traffic calming request:

  • The petition is registered at the speaker’s office and given a reference number.
  • A letter of acknowledgement is sent to the petitioner.
  • The relevant ward councillor is informed of the petition in their ward.
  • The petition is referred to the affected department or a Municipal Owned Entity (MOE) for consideration and response.
  • The Department or MOE considers the petition and submits either a progress report or a report and closure form to the Petitions Standing Committee.
