WATCH-Two cars broken into within two weeks on Austin Street in Woodmead

WOODMEAD – A concerned Woodmead resident says two cases were reported in the span of two weeks.

Within the space of two weeks, two vehicles were broken into on Austin Street in Woodmead.

A concerned resident, Gillian Lindsell said that the first incident happened on 1 February when her daughter parked her Honda Ballade in an allocated parking bay on the street. Within a few minutes, the car was broken into and all her daughter’s belongings were taken.

Lindsell added that her daughter was on her way back to university and had all her belongings packed into the car before they were stolen.

CCTV footage outside of Lindsell’s home showed a silver Toyota Auris driving down Austin Street and parking in a spot next to her car. A man gets out of the car and is seen shimmying the lock of the driver’s side door and getting inside the car.

He then sits in the vehicle before getting back into the Toyota Auris, which then drives away. A few minutes later the car returns and reverses into the same parking spot. A different man then gets into the Honda, where Lindsell believes he took the radio out, and then opens the boot and removes all the valuables from the boot before leaving.

The second incident occurred on 15 February in the mid-afternoon. Lindsell viewed the CCTV footage for the second incident again and believes it is the same three men and vehicle that allegedly broke into her daughter’s car.

In the second incident, the vehicle is seen driving along Austin Street and reversing into a parking bay, a man gets out from the left back passenger seat and puts on a jacket. He then moves to the back seat of the vehicle while another car drives down the road. The man then moves over to the white bakkie and is seen fiddling with the lock before getting into the vehicle and driving away.

Captain Granville Meyer, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, confirmed that in both incidents cases have been opened and are under investigation.
