Increasing plastic pollution has put more strain on storm water drains around Johannesburg and according to Ward 74 councillor Dave Fisher, on Corlett Drive the situation is bleak.

The Sandton Chronicle and its sister publication, North Eastern Tribune, reported on how biodegradable bags invented in Indonesia are being used to get rid of plastic pollution. The biodegradable bags can be reused or dissolved.
The City of Joburg started an initiative separation at source programme in 2018, which provides recycling bags in certain areas in Johannesburg northern suburbs, to reduce pollution.
This is how residents can separate waste at home:
- Try to keep your glass, plastic and metal containers rinsed of food matter and put them into separate dry recyclables bag.
- Take your separate waste bags to your nearest Pikitup drop-off facilities for further re-use and recycling process.
- Do not throw plastic outside your home or in a public area, instead find a bin near you.
- Explain waste separation to those close to you and your neighbours so that your community can lessen the impacts of plastic pollution.
