How secure are you? Make sure you keep your home safe in the dark

SANDTON – Keep safe during load-shedding.

Many residents around the country have faced widespread load-shedding, leaving them and their families in the dark, and potentially facing a security risk.

In this week’s edition of How Secure Are You?, an online and print security feature in partnership with the Sandton Chronicle and National Security and Fire, discuss how residents can make sure their home remains secure, even during a power outage.

According to Mulligay Pillay, the marketing and communication officer for National Security and Fire they will be running a load-shedding special on a power pack back-up system to ensure that residents can keep their security systems online even during load-shedding.

Extended power cuts, like the ones that have been experienced more recently, can affect an alarm system or electric gates. It is important to ensure that there is a backup system so that these continue working long after the power is out. Residents are encouraged to regularly check the battery packs to ensure that they have enough power to last throughout the outage.

Criminals may take advantage of power cuts in neighbourhoods as the load-shedding schedules are available to everyone. Residents should be extra vigilant while entering and leaving their home in the dark. With a house in the dark, it is also important to ensure that you have adequate lighting on your property.
