RIVONIA – CHOC hopes to raise funds to commemorate International Childhood Cancer Day as well as its 40th birthday.

International Childhood Cancer Day will be commemorated on 15 February to ensure a global commitment to reducing childhood cancer mortality and eliminate cancer-related pain and suffering.

One such organisation that is working towards these goals is the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC), which will also be celebrating its 40th birthday.

On International Childhood Cancer Day, CHOC calls on all South Africans to stand united to make childhood cancer a national and global child health priority in support of the World Health Organisation Global Childhood Cancer Target Goals.

CHOC, through its training and awareness programme, aims to improve survival rates by creating awareness of the early warning signs of childhood cancer. This is done by training health professionals and traditional health practitioners and by creating general awareness among the public.

“As we celebrate our 40 years of existence this year, we want to continue growing our impact as an organisation and we continue to rely heavily on individual and corporate support and participation,” said Carl Queiros, CEO of CHOC.

“As the only organisation in South Africa that provides nationwide comprehensive support to children and teenagers with cancer, life-threatening blood disorders and their families, we strive to increase our reach every year.”

CHOC encourages corporates, schools and individuals to ‘Have a heart for children living with cancer’ by going blue on 15 February. Participants can purchase and wear an International Childhood Cancer Day badge, heart pin or bracelet to spread the message and support the campaign by purchasing chocolate slabs to spoil loved ones for Valentine’s Day.
