Making a Difference lessons to start in Sandton

SANDTON – The Making a Difference Domestic Watch lessons aim to educate domestic workers about crime prevention.

The Making A Difference Domestic Watch lessons have kicked off for the year around Johannesburg.

The Making a Difference campaign was started by Penny Steyn 18 years ago after facing various instances of violent crime in her life. Now, she hosts monthly meetings in more than a dozen suburbs around Johannesburg providing domestic workers with a variety of lessons including how to report crimes and how to take care of their health.

The January lesson is called Making Matters Worse or Better.

This lesson focuses on providing attendees with the knowledge to make a potentially dangerous situation better, rather than becoming a victim. All the lessons come with written material so that all the attendees have the information at hand.

Steyn currently offers the lessons in 14 suburbs and would like to give an opportunity to other community members who would like to teach the lessons. The lessons will primarily focus on crime prevention and how to pass on information without putting lives in danger. To date, Steyn has written more than 70 lessons and hopes to share these with other communities.

“I do all this to contribute positively to the police’s efforts to stop crime or bring crime down and same intent applies to the security companies,” she said.

“If we don’t do something we could see crime escalate.”

Upcoming lessons will take place in Hurlingham on 29 January, Gallo Manor and Morningside on 23 January and Woodmead on 31 January.
