Keep your furry friends safe this New Year’s Eve

SANDTON – New Year's is a very stressful time for animals. Find out how you can take care of your furry friends.

Holiday times can be a stressful time for your furry friends, especially if you are going away on holiday.

It is important to make sure your animals are cared for and have a safe place during the New Year’s celebrations which often include fireworks.

There are several tips and tricks you can follow to make sure your animals are calm.

This according to Jaco Pieterse, general manager at the SPCA who said to not leave your dog or cat outside during the celebrations.

“Keep them inside a room with high windows to avoid them from jumping through the window.”

He continued that you should keep the windows, doors, curtains and blinds closed.

To distract your animals, “Turn on soothing music or the television.”

Pieterse said if it is possible, stay with your animals. “Get calming medication from your local veterinarian if you know your animals are petrified of fireworks.”

He added that it is necessary to create safe and hiding spaces for your animals where they can feel in control.

Finally, he said to give them lots of love.

The Sandton SPCA inspectors will be working 24/7 to attend to animal emergencies this festive season.
