Light comes to Grayston pedestrian bridge after 5 months

MALBORO – Pedestrians and motorists alike now have a much safer journey between their destinations.

The Grayston bridge has left pedestrians in the dark for a couple months.

Good news comes to bridge users who can now see the light after City Power replaced cables.

According to a media statement from City Power, the Executive Mayor has recently expressed concerns of vandalism of City Power infrastructure which impacts negatively on the residents of the City and frustrates the efforts for service delivery.

“City of Johannesburg has in recent weeks experienced an increase in the malfunctioning and total blackout of street and bridge lights due to vandalism and theft of City Power infrastructure costing the City millions of rands,” said City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.

The bridge has been without lights posing a threat to motorists and people using the bridge especially those from Alexandra coming back from shopping or work in Sandton.

“The new Marlboro pedestrian bridge has also been repeatedly vandalised and while waiting for work to commence on the second week of January 2019, we have tried to use temporary measure to keep some of the lights on the bridge on,” added Mangena.

Lights were officially turned on at 8pm on 22 December.

The statement further added that areas of concern are the high number of vandalism incidents on major highways such as the M1, M2,  and busy streets like the Empire Road, Corlett Drive, Malibongwe, Joe Slove drives, and Jan Smuts Avenue.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams said, “As a councilor in a neighbouring ward, I welcome this as it will improve safety for pedestrians and motorists. More lighting is needed in parts of Alexandra and Marlboro. In Ward 90 we need more streetlights in parts of Parkmore and lower Sandhurst. These are on our IDP wishlist.”
