Rays of Hope continues their work to create lasting change

HURLINGHAM – Rays of Hope, which supports young people in Alexandra has had a tough, but fulfilling year.

Rays of Hope, based in Hurlingham, supports nine community projects which assist vulnerable youth.

Rays of Hope started operating with one project in 1991 and has since grown to nine community projects, focusing on education and work readiness and those who are orphaned and vulnerable. They work within the Alexandra community and have built close relationships with community leaders, the police, high schools, the Alexandra Clinic and the Department of Social Development.

“We have had a tough but fruitful year thanks to our wonderful partners. An example of a strong partnership has been with Community Hour students from schools in the greater Johannesburg area, who have ensured that 350 Alex students received food every Saturday, and were able to attend two 5-day holiday programs,” said Sandy Chapman, the financial manager for Rays of Hope.

They have also had excellent results from their tertiary funding programme, Ignition. “The students achieved an incredible 86 per cent pass rate and one of our students graduated with a degree in economics cum laude.”

Chapman added that Rays of Hope has experienced a couple of challenges this year, including land grabs close to their offices and power failures on a regular basis, which interferes with their daily productivity. However, despite it all, they continue to impact over 2 500 lives every week by partnering with the Alexandra community to create lasting change.

“Should you wish to partner with us, we would value non-perishable food items to feed vulnerable families and those on chronic medication during December,” concluded Chapman.
