Over R250 000 raised to support Afrika Tikkun

Afrika Tikkun, an organisation dedicated to empowering young people, hosted its first gala dinner in Rivonia to celebrate its success and raise money for their future growth.

The non-profit organisation was started in 1994 and the gala dinner celebrated the centenary of its patron-in-chief, Nelson Mandela. The dinner saw generous patrons of Afrika Tikkun pledging money to various projects that the organisation hopes to embark on as well as participating in an auction. In total, the generosity of the guests helped raised over R250 000 for the organisation.

CEO of Afrika Tikkun, Marc Lubner, highlighted the importance of developing young children and how direction and guidance can offer the youth the opportunity to better the future for themselves and others. Lubner’s father, Bertie was one of the founding members of Afrika Tikkun and since 2006 he has embarked to grow the organisation to help even more children and young adults.

“My appeal tonight, is not to simply to say please throw money at charities like Afrika Tikkun, but rather to give thought, when you are spending your corporate social responsibility rands, when you look at your enterprise development spending and you look at your employment policies, give thought to what would your attitudes be if those individuals were not seen to be beneficiaries of your charity but in fact your future employees, “said Lubner.

Lubner highlighted that at the core of Afrika Tikkun they seek to give opportunity and direction to young people so that they do not become victims of poverty but rather become contributors to improving the country.

Morongwa Ramasobane, the chairperson of the Afrika Tikkun junior board, shared how her life was impacted by Afrika Tikkun. She said that the organisation had given her hope that she could achieve her dreams and obtain success. Ramasobane said that thanks to the donors, thousands of youths like her are kept safe and are inspired to do more and help others.

The organisation has many notable ambassadors, including cricketer Yaseen Valli, Bafana Bafana player Dean Furman and former boxing world champion Thulani ‘Sugarboy’ Malinga.

Comedian Donovan Goliath entertained guests throughout the evening but also explained some of the future projects Afrika Tikkun would like to embark on. They hope to raise funds for 120 computers to help educate more young people about technology, an additional kitchen to help feed a larger community in Hillbrow and two additional classrooms at the Wings of Life Community Centre in Diepsloot.
