Contagious Theatre from the viewpoint of the artistic director

PARKVIEW – Parkview resident and artistic director at Contagious Theatre, Jenine Collocott shares some insights on both the theatre and the latest play to be staged in Sandton.

Contagious Theatre is known for bringing some of the best plays within communities. This time around the Rosebank Killarney Gazette had the opportunity to chat with the artistic director at Contagious Theatre, Jenine Collocott.

Collocott started off on her own and has done about six productions since starting off as Contagious Theatre. Speaking about the latest offering, The Boy who cried Ninja by Alex Latimer, the director said they mostly produce adult plays. “However, this time we said why not try to make a play which also accommodates children. So, we contacted author Latimer who was also keen and gave us the go-ahead.”

Collocott said they storybook is a light children’s book with very few sentences so they had to fill in gaps and add flesh to the story but still stay true to the heart and soul of the story.

There are three main characters in the story which include Tim and both his parents, however, he meets more on the way. In the show, Tim witnesses some strange happenings around his house but no one believes his explanations. The mom and dad are strict and keep loading chores on Tim to punish him for his ‘unfounded’ reports.

“There are also parts in the play where characters draw in the crowd and directly communicate with the audience and interact with them. The target audience is four to 10 years old. Hopefully, people will respond and relate not to the ‘childish’ but ‘childlike’ aspect of the play,” said Collocott.

The director said she works with an amazing team comprising of a cartoonist, composer and puppeteer. People can book their tickets to enjoy this day-time theatre play in Sandton from 4 to 22 December.
