Operation Buya Mtheto takes on crime in Johannesburg

SANDTON – Operation Buya Mthetho has resulted in numerous arrests within the Sandton area.

 

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s Operation Buya Mthetho boasted another success last week when members of the department arrested a man for reckless and negligent driving in Bryanston.

The operation was started earlier this year by David Tembe, the new head of the department, in order to combat by-law infringement in the city.

Since the operation has started, it has boasted many success in clamping down on drunken driving, roadworthy vehicles and recovering stolen vehicles among others. Thanks to the success of the operation, it was launched by members of the provincial police department throughout Gauteng.

Here’s a timeline of some of the arrests made by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department in the past two months:

12 October – K9 officers arrested one suspect for possession of a stolen vehicle in Wynberg. The vehicle was bought fraudulently in Bedfordview and the suspect was detained at Bedfordview Police Station.

10 October – A taxi driver that was captured on camera by a biker driving facing oncoming traffic on Sloane Street in Bryanston was been arrested by JMPD officers. The driver has been charged with reckless and negligent driving and detained at Sandton Police Station.

9 October – One suspect was arrested by K9 officers at Rivonia Boulevard and 10th Street in Rivonia for possession of and dealing in drugs.

8 October – Five suspects were arrested by operations officers for public drinking around Buccleuch SPAR during a Crime Prevention Operation.

1 October – Five minibus taxis found with worn out tyres along the M1 and Grayston Drive during a Public Transport Operation by freeway officers. The drivers were ordered not to continue with their journey until new tyres were brought to the scene.

24 September – One suspect was arrested by operations officers for drunk driving, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and resisting arrest in Sandton. The suspect went through a red traffic light at Maude and West streets and tried to evade the officers. The passenger was also arrested for common assault.

18 September – K9 officers recovered a BMW that was stolen during a house robbery in the Sandton area.

1 September – K9 officers recovered two stolen vehicles, one of which was a Toyota Hilux that was taken during a house robbery in Sandton.
