The Abdullah Bin Salaam Islamic Centre, situated in the heart of Kelvin, hosted a fundraising event to continue with the school’s plans to help underprivileged learners.
The school, which was founded in 2010, is a non-profit public benefit school whose mission is to provide all learners with a meaningful and high standard of education. Over the past eight years, the school has managed to accommodate all its learners and the first matric class will graduate this year. The school, however, hopes to add to its facilities by adding more classrooms and improve the school overall.
The fundraising event, which was hosted at the Grayston Gallery, saw hundreds of community members attending the event to support the school. The Grayston Gallery, Ozzy’s Kitchen and Sophistibake all sponsored their services on the day to help raise funds for the school.
Razia Mahomed, the principal at the high school said she is very proud of the ‘seven young stars’ who will be the school’s matriculants this year. “We are so excited for them.”
Zahida Mayet, who is the principal of the junior school, has been working with the school since its inception when there were only about 35 learners. Mayet has been a teacher for over 30 years and when the school was opened she felt it was her calling to go work at the school and she has been passionate about her learners since then.
Mayet added that when the school started they had faced many challenges due to a lack of finances and they were unable to hire adequate teachers. Since then the school has grown significantly and they hope to continue their growth into the future. “We had a challenge with our premises, we didn’t have enough classrooms…our aim is to get permanent structures and have our own place.
“It’s so rewarding, I know at any school teachers come and go but I feel so rewarded because whatever knowledge I have I am able to spread around to all the learners and the teachers.”
Mayet added that the funding at the school is always a problem as they primarily serve the lower-income community. During the fundraising event, an auction was also hosted to raise additional funds.
