JSE challenge winners announced

SANDTON – The top young investors in the 2018 JSE Investment Challenge were recently announced.

The top young investors were recently announced at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton.

The young investors made up of high school learners and university students took part in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Investment Challenge.

More than 22 000 high school learners and university students have gained a solid understanding of how to invest in the stock market this year through the JSE Investment Challenge.

The competition is now in its 45th year and is an ongoing annual competition that enables learners and students to become aware of the fundamentals of investment strategy, encouraging them to research and strategise issues surrounding the trading of JSE-listed shares.

Of the 400 schools competing this year, three quarters are in disadvantaged areas. Teams from Lethukuthula Secondary School in Katlehong won four of the top five awards in the income category.

Each school and university team is given an imaginary R1 million to make decisions and make mistakes on a virtual trading platform that mimics the stock market but without any real risks over a six month period.

There was monthly and annual prizes for the best performing teams, their schools, and their teacher or mentor.

The overall winning team members each have R4 000 deposited into a Satrix Investment account, while the top performing university team wins a trip to an International Stock Exchange.

Each of the winners gets a secure start to their financial future by winning prizes in the form of a Satrix Investment Plan so they can continue to grow their winnings through smart investment decisions.

The Investment Challenge is the JSE’s flagship project for consumer education and part of its corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives.

Ralph Speirs, CSI Officer at the JSE said, “Our aim is to grow a more financially literate society by giving these students the fundamental skills required for being financially savvy and responsible.

“We demystify the JSE for them so when they start earning an income they will know exactly what to do with it. It’s not only about the potential returns but fundamentally understanding how the stock market works.”

Speirs continued that the game also exposes the players to a potential career as a broker, or to other career paths in the financial sector.
