#HowSecureAreYou: Compost scammers back in action

SANDTON – The old compost scammers are back again and the community is being warned not to support them by buying compost.

With spring fully underway, people are busy in their gardens to ensure lush greenery until next winter.

However, this time of year brings on criminal opportunists who prey on the vulnerable to make a quick buck.

This is according to Andre Snyman Eblockwatch founder and Bryanston resident, who said that the old compost seller scam is back again.

Snyman discusses this old scam as part of the week’s edition of How Secure Are You?, an online and print security feature in partnership with the Sandton Chronicle and Eblockwatch.

He said this is not a new scam but people still fall prey to these aggressive sellers. Snyman said the modus operandi is that they offer compost at a set price and then lay down more of the agreed number of bags.

“They then demand a large payment and get very aggressive and nasty if you do not pay. They are normally a few guys in a bakkie and they do this every year at this time,” said Snyman.

He continued that it is bad news to let the guys in, in the first place and that it is a huge security risk.

“They know where you live and can take note of your security that is in place on your property,” he said.

“Do not buy any compost from them and rather support your local nursery. If possible take pictures of them and send it on to your Whatsapp community groups to warn other residents if the scammers are in your area.”

He said that if you ignore them they will move on and residents should also phone their security providers to assist in a situation. In addition, Snyman said that residents should report the incidents on Eblockwatch which will then alert the surrounding members.
