A joint intelligence-driven operation on Friday, 12 October, led to the arrest of a man after police seized suspected stolen goods at a business premise in Wynberg.
This is according to a media statement on the South African Police Service Facebook page.
The media statement read, “The intelligence-led, multi-disciplinary team of the South African Police Service, operationalised information which led them to the secondhand goods dealership in Wynberg, Johannesburg North.
“Police seized, among other items, uncut diamonds, ivory, top-brand jewellery pieces including a Rolex wrist watch, cellphones, cash (different currencies), and copies of Identity Documents of alleged clients.
“The preliminary estimated value of the confiscated goods is between R1.5 and R2 million, pending forensic determination of the value of the uncut diamonds.
“Police have issued a warning to members of the public to be cautious and not be deceived into purchasing expensive items at unusually low prices. They could find themselves implicated in crime unwittingly.”
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner or police, Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange said, “We are fast approaching the festive season, a period characterised by heavy spending and gifting. So we want to warn the public to be very careful and selective in their search for bargains, especially when shopping at second-hand goods dealerships. Possession of stolen property is a criminal offence irrespective of how and where the property was obtained.”
