Joburg bursary applications for 2019 academic year now open
JOBURG – Preference will be given to South African citizens, who permanently reside in Johannesburg and intend to pursue full-time undergraduate studies in the sciences, finance, engineering and management.
The City of Johannesburg has opened applications for its 100 bursaries, each to the tune of R25 000, for the 2019 academic year.
MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Ntombi Khumalo said this will help youth to upgrade their skills and improve their prospects for employment.
“While these spaces are limited, we encourage every young person to apply,” she said.
Bursary applications opened on 25 September and will close on 12 October. Forms can also be collected from the Metro Centre in Braamfontein, or downloaded from the City’s website www.joburg.org.za, from the City’s Facebook and Twitter pages and the University of Johannesburg portal.

The City, Khumalo said, will also take a look at applicants’ academic merit, confirmation of residence in Johannesburg, and financial need.
The City’s Library and Information Services (LIS) department also recently announced its collaboration with Google South Africa to provide free online training. The training is in digital and entrepreneurial skills programmes. The course can be accessed by registering to be a student through an eLearning portal: Coj-ELearning – or online via www.cojelearning.org.za where students can access the content beyond library operational hours.
For every course completed, Google will issue endorsed certificates that can be added to the students’ qualifications or courses completed.
If students cannot access the Internet from their homes, there are eLearning classrooms at Diepsloot, Ivory Park, Westbury, Cosmo City, Jabavu, Emdeni, Sandton, Alexandra, Poortjie, Eldorado, Orange Farm and the Joburg City libraries.
