Ballyclare refuse site remains closed

SANDTON – Months after renovations began at the Ballyclare refuse site, it is still closed.

The Ballyclare Garden Refuse site has been closed since the end of May, due to renovations.

The site was supposed to reopen on 1 October, but there have been several delays in the process.

The Sandton Chronicle, together with Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp, paid a visit to the site to view the progress and it was evident a lot of work still needs to be done at the site to complete the renovations.

“There have been some delays at the site and for the last two to three weeks no work has been done.”

Earp said the retaining wall still needs to be built and the guardhouse remains incomplete as it still needs plumbing, windows, doors and electricity.

“Some structures, where the skips are to be placed, are incomplete. A lot can be done over the next few weeks, however, I don’t believe the handover will be soon.”

Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp stands next to where the skips will be placed.

He said that Pikitup acknowledged that the contractor was off-site. “They said that they have had some problem but that these have now been resolved.”

“All the clearing outside of the property was done with the help of the residents of the Arklow Road enclosure. They and businesses in the area, have paid for a security guard who now monitors the area around the garden site,” said Earp.

Pikitup has released a statement regarding the refuse site which is still under construction. “The garden site will, therefore, be closed until 14 December.”
