Walk for mental health at Tara hospital today

SANDTON – Tara hospital will host a fun walk on 17 October.

Everyone, everywhere walk for mental health.

This is the theme of Tara Hospital’s Mental Health Fun Walk, which they are hosting in collaboration with the South African Society of Psychiatry (SASOP).

The Tara Mental Health Day has reached a number of mental health care practitioners through a continued professional development event.

According to Vuledzani Munzhelele, communications officer at Tara, they would like to reach all Tara staff, various stakeholders involved in mental healthcare and the broader community to ensure increased awareness in and outside the hospital. “Due to the state of our patients, they will not be taking part, however, some organisations that have confirmed joining us will be coming with some of their patients to walk on the day.

“The event is aimed at making information and awareness of mental health more accessible and inclusive. Public hospitals, private hospitals, South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), SASOP, Talisman and many more will be joining us.”

She said this event follows last year’s Nelson Mandela Fun Walk, which was a great success. The free walk will take place today, 17 October and will cover a distance of 6.7 kilometres.

Registration starts at 8am and the walk at 10am.

The route will start at the bottom gate of the hospital follow a route through the leafy suburbs and end at the main entrance. Johannesburg Metro Police Department will be there to assist on the day.

Residents walk in aid of mental health at the previous year’s event.

Munzhelele concluded, “After the walk, there will be stalls at Tara where mental health organisations will be providing information on mental health and their services to the people.”
