Sandton SPCA receives donations following robbery

SANDTON – Following a burglary at the Sandton SPCA, the community has stepped in to assist.

The Sandton SPCA was devasted by a robbery a month ago, which was a major set back for the rescue society.

Following this, community members and local businesses have offered their assistance to help get the SPCA back on track.

The total damages during the burglary were estimated at around R150 000.

According to Jaco Pieterse, general manager at the Sandton SPCA they have received enormous support from the public. “Many people came forward and donated second-hand laptops and Beagle Watch Security installed a brand-new alarm system at no cost to the Sandton SPCA.”

He added that their telephone lines and the Internet have been restored. “We incurred a lot of cost by having a night guard on site every evening until the new alarm system was installed and working on 22 August.”

He said that it is now business as usual and they are in the process of carrying out other security upgrades. “We are installing burglar bars in our main reception at the counter and in front of the door leading to the reception area to keep our staff safe. The public contributed in order to upgrade our security at the SPCA.”

One retailer, Teljoy came forward and donated a new refrigerator, which will be used to store the animals’ medication.

Rami Sassen, CEO of the company said, “We are always happy to assist where we can and, as this was such a critical time for the SPCA and its furry friends, it was an absolute pleasure to have been able to step in.”
