Hope for traffic calming after multiway stop in Parkmore is approved

SANDTON – The Johannesburg Roads Agency recently approved a new multiway stop street in Parkmore.

Parkmore residents can expect a slight relief in traffic following the approval of a multiway stop.

The three-way stop street has been approved by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and will be installed at the corner of Hilda Road and Holt Street.

Resident and road closure committee member, Shelley Browner was the driving force behind the need for the stop street at this intersection. She said that they put a formal request through to the JRA and that they had a site meeting with a traffic engineer. “One of the motivations was that coming down Hilda Road towards Holt Street is lack of visibility.”

Browner said that the application has been approved and drawings have been made and sent to the depot, waiting for the installation. “There were around 14 or 15 complaints about the intersections and it will help a lot with regards to speeding in the street and help people trying to turn across the road.”

The whole process took a few months since the application was put in. Browner said that the next step is to put in an application for speed humps and a traffic circle in the area.

Zoleka Jika, assistant manager of customer relations management for the JRA said the formal request was received in May and, after the investigation, the traffic engineering division approved it in August.

Jika said intersections are required to have sufficient sight distance for safe navigation.

“The geometric layout/design and the reduced sight distance [of vehicles travelling south-east on Holt Street], warranted the approval of a multiway stop at the intersection of Holt Street and Hilda Road.”

She said the multiway stop will mitigate the reduced sight distance, making the intersection safer to navigate.

Jika added that the installation and work will be prioritised in accordance with the depot work programme and availability of materials.
