Marikana Memorial Lecture hosted in Sandton
SANDTON – The inaugural lecture commemorated the miners who lost their lives during a wage strike in 2012.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union hosted its inaugural memorial lecture in Sandton.
The memorial seeks to commemorate the 44 mineworkers who were killed during a wage strike four years ago. The memorial lecture was hosted on 15 August as a prelude to various other activities including the release of a report by the Institute for Security Studies which details what happened at the second scene of the massacre.
The union has also called for 16 August, the day on which 34 of the miners were killed, to be declared a public holiday. Western Cape judge president John Hlope, a speaker at the event, also echoed this sentiment and called for a public holiday to be declared. Politicians including Julius Malema from the Economic Freedom Fighters and Mmusi Maimane from the Democratic Alliance have also called from 16 August to be declared a public holiday.
While a commemorative event was hosted by Lonmin at Marikana, some Twitter users questioned the choice of venue for the memorial lecture:
"Marikana Massacre Memorial Lecture at Sandton Convention Centre"…This country is truly a crime a scene.

Why it goes to SANDTON instead of North West or Eastern Cape?
