#WomensMonth: An exchange of saving ideas
SANDTON – The Johannesburg Stock Exchange hosted the She Invests event to teach women about their various investment options.
In celebration of Women’s Month, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton hosted the She Invests event to encourage more investment among women.
Zeona Jacobs, the director of marketing and corporate affairs for the stock exchange said they have found that when it came to saving and investing, women predominantly put away money to care for their families, rather than to prepare for the future. They hope that by educating women more about the various options available to them, they can encourage more women to save money for their future.
Jacobs added that a study had found that fewer than two per cent of women invested in the stock exchange. “We have to change our attitudes towards credit and money, there is a place for a savings account and a unit trust and an ETF [Exchange Traded Funds] but it depends on your long-term outlook and how you want to manage your life.”
Carly Barnes of Easy Equities hosted a talk, Shoes or Shares, and discussed how women could get involved in Exchange Traded Funds. “You can start with R50 or R10, you don’t need to have a million bucks to get started or have an MBA in genius, and it really isn’t that difficult. My journey has been interesting but I have learned, and I have learned in doing, it’s now affordable and easy to invest.”
Khanyi Dhlomo, a media personality and founder of Ndalo Media discussed how women should invest in themselves and see their potential growth. Dhlomo discussed how she had taken risks during her career which might not have made sense to an outsider. However, she added that knowing and understanding her goals had helped guide her.
Dhlomo spoke of her first job as a fashion assistant and how she had considered giving up but rather decided to preserve and learn from the experience. “A little voice in my head told me, ‘ Just invest your time, invest in the opportunity, control your ego and your pride and learn’, it was the best thing I could have done.”
Other discussions throughout the day included how to invest in your brand, how to achieve financial freedom and how to explore alternative investment options such as cryptocurrencies.
