African Philanthropy Forum set to explore collaboration opportunities

The African Philanthropy Forum is hosting its annual conference at The Wanderers Club in Illovo to discuss solutions to various challenges faced in Africa.

The theme for this year’s conference is Potential and Reality: Bridging the Gap. The conference aims to create a platform for speakers and delegates to discuss tailored solutions to issues around health, population explosion, education, regional integration in Africa and climate change among others.

It further highlights the role philanthropists can play in actualising a better Africa. The conference will also present opportunities to explore collaborations and partnerships for increased impact.

Over the two-day period, a diverse group of visionary leaders including philanthropists, social investors, heads of foundations and corporate organisations will gather to learn and share best practices that have been garnered over decades of industry experience in Africa and across the world.

Among those confirmed to participate include former president Thabo Mbeki founder of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, Yvonne Chaka Chaka founder of the Princess of Africa Foundation, Donne Nicole CEO of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation and renowned activist and founder of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, Phuti Mahanyele among many others.

“South Africa has gained significant momentum in the philanthropic space over the years. Hosting the conference in Johannesburg provides the opportunity for philanthropists and stakeholders to engage and discuss best practices that are scalable and adaptable to amplify development work in Africa,” said Tsitsi Masiyiwa, the board chairperson for the forum.

“Beyond this, it is also the centennial of one of the most influential Africans that has ever lived, that is Nelson Mandela, someone we all continue to draw inspiration from.”

Although there has been exponential growth in the continent’s largest economies, more than half of the continent’s economies have either slowed down or come to a halt. The conference seeks to inform, inspire and ignite the passion to bridge the widening and persistent gap between Africa’s potential and its reality.

Established in 2014, the forum is a community of philanthropists and social investors who seek to influence and actualise inclusive and sustainable development in Africa. Since its inception, the forum has devoted its efforts to promoting homegrown philanthropy and establishing a stronger presence on the continent with footprints in nine countries including Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya.
