Sandton SPCA’s is locked in love on #MandelaDay

SANDTON – The Sandton SPCA will sell dog tags for R67 on Mandela Day in support of the initiative.

The Sandton SPCA celebrated Mandela Day with its own take on the ‘love locks’ commonly found on bridges in Paris, France.

The entrance fee and a tag cost R67 per person or per tag if you wish to purchase more than one, which included a tour of the kennel facilities.

Visitors were able to write a message or a name in remembrance of Nelson Mandela and his kind legacy for fellow humans and animals. The message can then be placed on the Wall of Honour.

The Sandton SPCA has set a goal of R67 000 to assist neglected and abused animals and to continue with its outreach projects in the surrounding impoverished areas.

Jean-Pierre van Wyk, the marketing and fundraising officer at the Sandton SPCA said some people and animals are unforgettable. “They touch our lives in many ways and we are better off because of them.”

He said the community can purchase a tag, write their pet’s name on it, or a message, and see the tags proudly symbolising the legacy of our great leader, Nelson Mandela. “You can also express your feelings by writing inspirational words like hope, love, peace, freedom, unity, trust or forgiveness on the tags.”

The Sandton SPCA will also place a tag with ‘Hope’ written on it, which represents all the animals they are not able to help and all those they have helped in the past. Van Wyk said people who are unable to join on the day but would still like to contribute to please visit its website.

Even though Mandela Day is over the SPCA still needs lots of items.

The Sandton SPCA also require various necessities which can be donated:
