Barack Obama to speak at the Wanderers Stadium ahead of Madiba’s birthday

ILLOVO – Barack Obama looks forward to first African trip since he left office.

Former American president Barack Obama is looking forward to his first trip to South Africa since he left office at the beginning of last year.

In a post on his Facebook page, Obama said, “I was proud to visit sub-Saharan Africa more times than any other sitting president, and I’ll return this week to visit Kenya and South Africa. In South Africa, the Obama Foundation will convene 200 extraordinary young leaders from across the continent and I’ll deliver a speech to mark the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth.”

Obama arrived in Kenya on 16 July during a stop-over en route to South Africa. He is expected to meet with Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Ahead of his visit, Obama also shared a list of books by African authors which he hopes people will add to their reading list. Among the books are Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela.

Obama will give the annual lecture on 17 July from 2.45pm at the Wanderers Stadium in Illovo. Follow Sandton Chronicle on Facebook and Twitter for rolling updates.
