Service delivery issues across Sandton are ongoing.
The Sandton Chronicle spoke to two councillors to get an update on what is happening in their wards.
Mike Wood, Ward 106 councillor:
Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood said things are generally going well in the ward, however, they are faced with the usual service delivery issues due to aged infrastructure.
Wood identified that the condition of certain sections of the roads and the electricity supply to certain sections of the ward remain a challenge. “Homeless folk remain a huge challenge in the ward and crime in parts of the ward have become an issue,” said Wood.
Some highlights over the past few months are:
- The Johannesburg Roads Agency has started with road resurfacing in parts of the ward
- There have been water upgrades in parts of Bryanston Ext 3 which are most welcome.
“The monthly mayoral clean-up is well supported in the ward with active community involvement,” he explained.
Wood said he has a number of very active residents’ associations in his ward and this assists him in sorting out issues and ensuring service delivery. “A pleasing aspect is the fact that a number of younger folk are getting involved in the residents’ associations.”
David Potter, Ward 102 councillor:
Potter said that things are going well and many service delivery matters are receiving the necessary attention from the City.
“Whilst not all is resolved or easily resolvable, there is definitely a greater attempt to attend to issues logged with the City.”
He has identified some of the issues in his ward such as a few substations that need physical maintenance and faint road markings across the ward.
“A challenge that exists in my Ward and across the City remains illegal dumping, displaced persons, and the general lack of compliance with the rules of the road by motorists.”
He continued that vandalism of electricity substations, and theft of cables remain a concern.
Some highlights over the past few months are:
- The shrubbery along William Nicol was cut back, and large areas of roads have been resurfaced in Ward 102, including Curzon Road in Bryanston.
- Streetlight repair performance has also dramatically improved.
“In 2013 I launched the Look and Log Campaign which has grown in Ward 102 and across the City, empowering residents to Look and Log their issues with the City.”
He said where these issues are not resolved in a reasonable time, residents are encouraged to engage their specific Ward councillor.
“The Ward committee and various residents’ associations of Ward 102 are also active in reporting matters of concern to the City and following up with my office when issues are not resolved, that should resolvable.”
