Several intersections across Sandton have been plagued by cell phone and smash-and-grab incidents.
Two of the intersections are at William Nicol and Sandton drives, and at Jan Smuts Avenue and 6th Road where criminals target people and steal their cell phones.

Maphakela said there was one case reported last month at Jan Smuts Avenue and 6th Road in Hyde Park.

“If you see someone approach your car, you must press the hooter and the guys will run away,” he said.
Maphakela added that if you saw someone at your window and if it was safe to do so, drive off to avoid becoming a victim.
He said sometimes the perpetrators were armed and some use spark plugs to break the window and steal your items.
“They target people with visible items. Put your valuables in the boot of the car or under the seat. The community should not talk on their phones when they are at intersections and always remain vigilant.”
