Calls for a national shutdown of roads today (2 July), which circulated on social media, appear to be completely false as traffic flowed smoothly across the city this morning.
The shutdown called for motorists to block roads and highways with their vehicles to protest the Value Added Tax (Vat) and petrol price increase.
On the same day as the intended strike, it was announced that the petrol price would increase by 26c, just one month after an 82c petrol hike.
Metro police spokesperson, Superintendent Edna Mamonyane, told the Sandton Chronicle that while she was aware of the messages circulating on social media, the Metro police had not received any application for the alleged strike.
