Power restored to north eastern suburbs – City Power

JOBURG – On Saturday night, the power network was dealt another blow when a sub-station in Waverley caught on fire, affecting many suburbs in Sandton, Rosebank and in the north-east of Joburg.

City Power announced on Sunday that the power had been restored to all of the north eastern suburbs of Johannesburg.

This, after the network was stabilised after increased generation from the Kelvin Power Station, and the load rotation which many of the suburbs experienced, had stopped.

On Saturday night, the power network was dealt another blow, though, when a sub-station in Waverley caught on fire. The following suburbs were affected, according to the Intelligence Bureau on Facebook: Inanda, Melrose, Melrose Estate, Kent Park, Norwood, Houghton, Fairways, Waverley, Killarney, Wierda, Illovo, Killarney south and east, Oaklands, Houghton West, Melrose Arch, Orchards, Houghton Estate, Bramley, Atholl and Lyndhurst.

Ward 23 councillor, Sarah Wissler, tweeted this photo of the fire:

City Power has since tweeted, “The network has been stabilised. The faulty equipment has been repaired and is back online. As a result, the load rotation in the north eastern suburbs has been stopped.”
