Extraordinary business leader receives lifetime achievement award in Sandton

SANDTON – Mervyn King was awarded for his remarkable leadership and success.

The Regenesys Business School honoured renowned business leader Mervyn King with a lifetime achievement award in Sandton.

King, who received the award on 14 June, was honoured for his extensive contributions to the business community and good governance, not only in South Africa but around the world.

William Vivian, a founding director at Regenesys, said that they wanted to use the award as an opportunity to acknowledge those who have done great work for society.

“This lifetime achievement award for leadership is presented by Regenesys Business School to an extraordinary leader, who has achieved remarkable business success, who possesses exemplary leadership qualities, who has made an outstanding contribution to socio-economic development and has lived a life of the highest moral and ethical standard.”

King said that he was honoured to receive the award and shared his views on why good corporate governance is so important. He said that throughout the 20th century, success in business had been defined by increased profit, increased share price and an increased dividend to shareholders, even if it was at a cost to society and the environment.

King said that in his own experience working within the textile industry he understood that protecting the environment is worth the cost incurred to the business. During a meeting at St James’ Palace with the International Integrated Reporting Council, which King is the chairman of, it was decided that businesses could not continue using all the earth’s natural assets, thinking that they would be replenished.

“I was a party to that change, I’ve done it with passion and dedication and I’ve done it for years because of the realisation that it was not an economic imperative, but because there is a moral imperative for all of us to try and ensure that those that inherit the planet after us are, at least, not in a worse position,” concluded King.
