Students from Varsity College Sandton’s Education department gave back to the community throughout the month of May.
The students, who are enrolled in a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development for Foundation and Intermediate Phase, participated in the service learning at the Emfundisweni Primary School and Ikage Primary School.
The service learning forms part of the Work Integrated and Learning Program.
This programme is an essential aspect of the degree whereby a student is required to complete practical work experience in the desired field in order to attain their qualification.
Therefore the students get valuable teaching experience and in-depth insight into the field of teaching. It also exposes students to the different educational systems in place in the different sectors of education.
The teaching opportunity at Ikage Primary School and Emfundisweni Primary School also forms part of the college’s continuous efforts to assist and give back to the community of Alexandra.
The students and primary school children fully embraced and participated in fun and educational lesson activities organised by the future teachers. The students executed their activities for the day by designing their own creative lesson plans and using resources and learning material appropriate for their grade of teaching. The children ranged from Grade R to Grade 5.
The School of Education’s teaching experience coordinator, Denise Ramdhav, said, “Service Learning is a component of the Teaching Experience Module which forms part of the IIE [Independent Institute of Education] Bachelor of Education Degree.
“The campus identifies a community school and students are taken to the school where they are given the opportunity to teach the learners a short group based activity. By doing this we give our students the chance to enhance their group organisational and interpersonal skills.
“Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn on campus to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning.”
