Gauteng MEC worried about increase in road crashes, 25 fatalities this past weekend alone

SANDTON – The Gauteng MEC for community safety is worried about the increase in road accidents.

This past weekend alone the province recorded 25 fatalities on the roads.

Law enforcement agencies had to contend with various operational difficulties such as drunk driving as well as reckless and negligent driving behaviour.

The Gauteng MEC for community safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane voiced her concern about the increase in the number of accidents in the province.

“I am deeply worried by the ongoing rate of road crashes in our province. Our road safety efforts and practices continue to be ignored by some drivers which result in the death of many innocent citizens.”

She said that too often, drivers and passengers do not buckle up which result in many losing their lives when involved in an accident. “Excessive speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol have also been found to be the most contributing factors to these crashes.”

Nkosi-Malobane said the people walking the busy freeways are also a major concern as many of them do not wear reflective clothing which makes it difficult for the drivers to see them and result in many deaths.

“As Gauteng government, we will intensify the road safety education programmes in reducing road crashes within our roads. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones during the past weekend and wish those who are injured, a speedy recovery. We call upon all drivers to continue to observe the rules of the road to avoid further road crashes,” she said.
