Fiery induction ceremony, five new firefighters assigned to Sandton

SANDTON – Five of the new firefighters will be working at the Sandton Fire Station.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services acting executive head Mhlengi Makhubalo together with the MMC of Public Safety Michael Sun have welcome 91 new firefighters, including five who will be joining the Sandton Fire Station.

Earlier this year, the City promised to increase the number of firefighters in order to render effective professional emergency services at all times.

New City of Johannesburg firefighters are welcomed to the department.

The group has now concluded a three-month intensive induction training programme which includes programmes such as hot fire drills, primary and secondary search and rescue, high-rise building training, self-contained breathing apparatus training and motor vehicle accident extrication, among others, at the Rietfontein Fire and Rescue Training Academy and are now ready to serve the residents of the City of Johannesburg.

The five new firefighters at Sandton Fire Station began their duties on 4 June.

The excitement was palpable as all the new firefighters were officially welcomed to the department at a ceremony at the Rietfontein Fire Station on 1 June. Sun congratulated them on their completion of the induction programme and warned them of the problems they could face on the job, and encouraged them to always do their best when called on duty to serve the residents.

The newly recruited firefighters said they are ready to deal with any emergency situation they might have to face in the line of duty. Some of them added that they have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time.

The 91 new firefighters eagerly anticipate their first day of duty on 4 June.

Robert Mulaudzi, the emergency services spokesperson said, “We hope that this new group of firefighters will contribute immensely to the safety of all the residents of the City of Johannesburg.”
