St Stithians College hosted a cultural arts festival on 24 May to showcase the wide variety of talent the boys’ and girls’ college have to offer.
Throughout the day, schoolchildren had the opportunity to take part in various workshops and showcase their various talents.
Peta Hanly, the director of arts and culture at St Stithians Girls’ College said, “In the early morning, the girls’ college had two workshop sessions where the girls could choose between hip-hop, 3D mandala mural-making, stage combat, eastern culture and yoga, drum café, an improv workshop, slam poetry or attend a girls’ college Choir World Choir Games rehearsal.”
Basie Viljoen, the director of arts and culture at the St Stithians Boys’ College said, “The Boys’ College utilises this academic free day to showcase all their cultural talents through various inter-house competitions. The entire school participated in a junior and senior oratory completion and a full scale junior and senior chess competition.”
Viljoen added that the cultural day gave every learner the opportunity to participate in various cultural activities, even those who might not have participated culturally because they were involved in sports at the school.
“Students had to perform one individual and one full house participation event of five minutes each. Judges were blown away with talented boys who exhibited violin playing skills, hip-hop skills, singing anything from rap to opera and comedians entertaining with witty original scripts.”
After the individual workshops with the boys’ and girls’ college, all learners gathered at the school’s amphitheatre to watch various performances including Hani the Legacy and Jittery Citizens as well as this year’s Fleur du Cap Best Actor, Craig Morris, who performed Blood Orange.
The schoolchildren also spent the afternoon watching plays selected for the Festival of Excellence in Dramatic Arts, an open mic session, a senior drama showcase and a DJ play-off with a guest appearance by the up-and-coming SA band, Born Free.
