Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, the spokesperson for the Hawks, confirmed the attempted cash-in-transit heist. “It is alleged that the armoured vehicle traveling on the N3, heading south towards Marlboro, was attacked by three vehicles.”

Mulamu said the suspects fired shots at the armoured vehicle to try and stop it. “The criminals were disturbed by Metro police and then fled with the firearm of one security guard.

“We are investigating an attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder.”

Jacqui Moloi Rorke of Fidelity ADT said the security officer in question sustained wounds from the shattered glass as a result of the windscreen being shot. “He received medical treatment but was not hospitalised.”
