#ICYMI: Victim tells how suspects tied up family, ransacked house

BRYANSTON - A family was tied up while suspects ransacked their Bryanston home.

A Bryanston family was tied up and robbed at gunpoint by two suspects in their St James Crescent home on 4 May when two suspects scaled the back wall and gained access to the property at around 10pm.

Speaking about the incident, the victim, who wished to remain anonymous, said her son had friends over and they were having a party on the patio. She and her husband were watching television inside the house.

“They came into the house and we heard the girls scream,” said the victim. She added that there were two men who were armed. The perpetrators threatened to shoot the victims and then tied them up.

“They took my son down the hall and asked where the safe is. They then came back and took me with them and asked where the keys were.” The victim said she couldn’t find the keys to the safe and they kept on hitting her.

After this, she said they ransacked the house. “We were tied up for about an hour and a half and they took laptops, cellphones, and jewellery. They ripped the ring off my finger,” said the victim.

She said the suspects said they were hungry and asked where the food was. “I told them the food is on the stove in the kitchen. Eventually, they left. One of the girls had managed to hide her cellphone and was able to call the police who arrived within 10 minutes.”

Andre Snyman of eBlockwatch said there were many security companies operating in the Bryanston area, however, no one shared their crime statistics, creating a barrier between the information that comes from the companies and the community.

“There is not enough transparency about crime and what is happening. If we know what is going on we can be better prepared,” ended Snyman.

Captain Granville Meyer, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, confirmed the incident.

“The suspects jumped over the wall and lifted a sliding door, entered the house and threatened to shoot them. The suspects made off with items to the value of about R70 000.”
