Local radio station sets up shop in Sandton SPCA cage

SANDTON – Thousands of Rands were recently donated to the Sandton SPCA through pledges.

Mix 93.8 FM broadcast from one of the animal cages at the Sandton SPCA to raise funds for the society.

The broadcast was from 6am until 6pm and the presenters spent the day in the cage engaging with listeners who pledged money to the SPCA. And just before 12pm, more than R60 000 had been raised for the animals.

With Freedom Day on 27 April which commemorates, celebrates and remembers the fundamental right to freedom, it is for this reason that the radio station and the SPCA wanted to focus and remind the public of the general and fundamental principles that the society fights for.

Jean-Pierre van Wyk, marketing, PR, and fundraising manager at the Sandton SPCA said this campaign was linked to Freedom Day and the society’s five general animal freedom principles.

“The DJs broadcast from inside the cages and it is basically a day in the life of an SPCA animal. In order for the animals to survive during the day, we need volunteers, staff, food, water, and all those different elements.

“There have been some large amounts of money donated and some competition between companies to see who pledges the most money.”

The funds raised will be used to build quarantine kennels. “We put a target of R50 000 and our goal is R100 000 to have these kennels constructed.”
