Two Grade 11 teams from Redhill School participated in the annual Vega Vibe competition with one of the teams placing second.
The competition presents the teams with a real client and asks them to develop a marketing strategy for the client. The goal is to give students the opportunity to practice the art and science behind branding.
The six youngsters who placed second are Joshua Sawyer, Asha de Lanerolle, Chris Chidrawi, Freya Allatt, Kirtania Munisamy and Shameera Cassim.
Bronwyn De Matos Ala, Redhill School’s head of design, explained that entry to the competition is by invitation. “Redhill School has entered for the last three years, but this was the first time for these Grade 11 students.”
There were 48 children competing, representing six schools. The competitors had three days to prepare for the competition and spent this time researching the client and revisiting their business studies and design theory.
“The group presented their ideas with their ‘Change Your Shopping List, Change the World’ concept. The client was Just Now – a company that aims to reduce food wastage in South Africa by selling food that is about to expire, at reduced prices, in specific locations.”
De Matos Ala added that although the competition was filled with pressure and stress, the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed themselves. “It became stressful towards the end, pulling everything together for the presentation but they are proud of what they managed to pull off.”
“I am so proud of both teams as they did not have much time to prepare and I am also proud of how they worked together as tight teams, collaborating their skills to come up with exciting campaigns in the end,” she said.
“They really enjoyed taking part in the competition and are determined to win next year. They learnt a great deal about working within the specifications of the brief, communicating with a client, as well as working within a collaborative team with uniquely skilled members.”
Matthew Counihan, Redhill School’s director of visual and performing arts added,”Creativity is celebrated and respected at Redhill. Our students are encouraged to push boundaries, defy the status quo and to dream beyond the confines of societal norms.”
