High number of accidents in Johannesburg over the festive season

SANDTON – Johannesburg Emergency Management Services responded to a total of 328 road emergencies over the Easter holidays.

 

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has noted with concern the number of motor vehicle accidents and pedestrian accidents responded to over this year’s Easter holiday long weekend.

This according to Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services who urged pedestrians to exercise extreme caution when walking on roads and to remain safe.

“From 6pm on 29 March to 6am on 3 April, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services Call Centre received a total of 328 road emergencies during.”

Mulaudzi said that of the total, 183 were motor vehicle accidents and 145 were pedestrian accidents with five fatalities. “In one of the pedestrian accidents we attended to on Good Friday a female nurse lost her life when she was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on her way to work along Chris Hani Road in Pimville, Soweto.”

Mulaudzi said over the long weekend around 30 motor vehicle accidents and 10 pedestrian accidents happened in Sandton and Alexandra. There were no fatalities in these accidents and most of the fatalities were in the south of Johannesburg.”

“We would like to urge our residents to exercise extreme caution when walking and, when crossing the road, residents are urged to wear visible clothing especially at night and also to use designated pedestrian bridges when crossing the freeway and refrain from drinking and walking, especially at night.”

He said motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving on the roads and obey the rules of the road.
