Dream Riders raise money to make dreams come true

ILLOVO – The Reach for a Dream Foundation encourages people to ride for a purpose during the 947 Cycle Challenge.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation is encouraging people to sign up for the 947 Cycle Challenge to raise money to make dreams come true.

Reach for a Dream, a non-profit organisation, aims to make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses. This year will be the 12th Dream Rider campaign Reach for a Dream has organised and they hope to make it their biggest yet. To date, the Dream Riders have raised over R6 million.

Applications for Dream Riders have just opened and 30 people have signed up. However, the goal is to have 600 riders who will take part in the cycle challenge.

Janine Shamos from the Reach for a Dream Foundation said, “Each rider pays R1 800. We are encouraging people to raise R3 000 this year in honour of our 30th birthday. It takes two riders’ contributions to fulfil one dream so the more we raise, the more dreams we can make true.”

Dream Riders will receive a cycling jersey, buff, fun cycling socks, goodie bags and full hospitality after the event – including a hot meal, beverages, sports massages and snacks.

Shamos added that all the money raised from the Dream Riders goes toward fulfilling dreams. While the foundation does have other projects throughout the year, such as Queen for a Day and Captain Courage, the majority of the funding is for dream fulfilment.

“This is our second biggest fundraiser and we hope that this year will be bigger and better. We’d like to raise well over R1 million.”

The 94.7km race will see cyclists taking to the streets of Johannesburg, many of whom will be riding for a purpose.
